Hello America

A series inspired by J.G.Ballard's novel 'Hello America'

Alice’s new series ‘Hello America’ takes inspiration from J.G. Ballard’s 1981 novel, in which he details the way the American landscape has been transformed by climate change.

In Ballard’s novel, the skyscrapers of New York are now surrounded by sand dunes, and the whole city is a desert. Washington DC has become a wasteland where the government no longer exists, and LA is a humid jungle glowing with the neon lights of abandoned casinos.

Hello America is characterised by rich clashing colours, chaotic compositions and a juxtaposition between nature and architecture.

Alice’s paintings capture the post-apocalyptic imagery of the novel, and with the distorted representation of recognisable places, such as The White House, Alice depicts a series of frenzied landscapes.
