Inspiration by the Sea

Last week we took a trip to the UK’s glorious coastal town of Margate; home to the UK Creative Festival and Creative Circle Awards. We had a great time meeting talented people, attending inspiring talks and, of course, joining in the celebrations at the awards ceremony!

We started off the day at the careers fair where we were able to meet so many passionate young people that came prepared with insightful questions and an enthusiasm to know more about the industry. In the morning Nicki and Chris hosted a roundtable workshop intending on discussing the different career paths you can go into with the ability to draw, sharing the knowledge with young people that you don’t necessarily get taught in education. The session ended up evolving into a more general workshop with students from a local school that was different and valuable in so many ways, another reason why events such as these are so important in the industry.

The proceeds of the ticket sales go to the Creative Foundation who are a charity that exist to support diverse and underrepresented talent, providing them with mentoring opportunities within the creative industry that they may not have been able to access otherwise.

"It was one of the most rewarding days that I’ve spent in the industry for ages. When you’ve been deep into our business for a very long time, it's so easy to forget the amount of knowledge that has built up that you rely on and take for granted. To be able to listen and to be listened to in such a sincere, open and honest way was brilliant. Long may it continue."

Later that day at the Creative Circle Awards, we were so proud to accept a gold Best Music Video Animation award on behalf of Em Cooper for The Beatles ‘I’m Only Sleeping’, as well as a bronze award for Alva Skog’s distinctive illustration on the recent 'Hello Yellow' campaign for Apple.

"We didn’t set out to win awards, and we’ve never chased them, but sometimes it’s nice to win one, especially when it’s at an event where your peers have had a say in the result, so that makes the Creative Circle a bit different, it’s the award you can win without resorting to influence rather than talent. So, thanks for the Gold guys!"

"There’s so much talk about accessibility to the creative industry and to our little pocket of advertising - and equally so much inaction. What the Creative Festival is doing was amazing to see firsthand and be a part of - to spend quality time with, and give advice to, those who we don’t often see represented around us on a day to day basis in the industry was truly a privilege. If you’re not involved, get involved - it’s too important to not do so."
