Generation Wild 'Wilderflowers'

Beautiful live action puppetry encouraging kids to get outdoors!

Working alongside Generation Wild Colorado and Sukle, Matte Cooper crafts an endearing film bringing the 'Wilderflowers' campaign to vibrant life. Setting out with the aim to encourage more kids to get outdoors and save the bees, Wilderflowers is a campaign that distributes seed packets for families to plant and make a difference in their local environment.

Approached for his highly crafted, personality-led directing work, Matte took to the brief wanting to build an immersive and colourful world that directs families to the landing page where you can find locations of free seeds.

Brief

As a father himself, Matte resonated greatly with the campaign's message of creating a safer future for nature's pollinators, and therefore future generations, as well as encouraging kids away from screens and outdoors. To depict this in his signature style, he crafted mischievous flower puppets that guide the central character into an oasis of nature.

The campaign will be further promoted through art installations at schools, with an estimated 151 million seeds planted across the state of Colorado connecting kids with nature in a meaningful and sustainable way.

Design

Determined to create something tactile, curious, and engaging that awakens a sense of awe and wonderment, Matte designed each element to delight, taking reference from whimsical cinematic puppetry and films. The film embraces a colourful aesthetic that contrasts with the hyper-saturated world of screens and technology.

Working with an expert art department team and renowned fabricators, Matte brought a typical Colorado home and the outdoor environment (nodding to Crested Butte) to life in miniature, then directed a team of talented puppeteers to bring this mischievous story to life.

With additional 2d design from KITCHEN on the facial expressions of the child character, the film is a love letter to the outdoors and the adventure that awaits when you nurture and support your local environment.
