v.Gula - Installations Series
A short film series re-interpreting the seven deadly sins through a modern lens.
A self-initiated fine art project, ‘Installations’ is a seven-part series re-interpreting the classical concept of the seven deadly sins in a stylised design style. Corey unleashed his full multi-faceted skillset on this project combining elements of contemporary fashion with Renaissance era aesthetics and abstract environments.
'v. Gula' represents gluttony, an abstract world of curiosity, obsession and abundance where desire and danger intersect.
Concept
Corey approached this project with the mission of crafting seven large-scale worlds to be abstractions of our current reality and based off each deadly sin. Each world was crafted around a central figure reacting and reflecting the world they inhabit in an artistic avant-garde style.
Utilising his high-end vfx and cg animation skills, Corey designed, directed and produced each film as a labour of love and a declaration of the artistic vision he wants to continue to cultivate.
"I will never forget the moment I saw the statue of David in Florence. I’ve always had a hard time articulating the feeling - but it was pivotal for me. It lives at the end of a hallway that, when you first walk in, doesn’t look that big but as you inch closer the true scale reveals itself and the gravity of the statue hits you. Experiencing this massive flawlessly carved chunk of marble was the first time I truly felt the weight of what art could be and could do."
Approach
Drawn to creating strong visual metaphors within his work, each realm was crafted to be timeless but also reflective of Corey’s contemporary design style. Beginning with collecting references that resonated each concept was continuously refined to achieve the impactful final short-form films.
A storyteller, Corey stuck to a limited number of shots for each concept to allow the narrative to be infused as much as possible in each scene and allow the viewer to understand the context of the film and the abstract world in which it exists in Corey’s interpretation.
